Background
What is CBT?
Cross Border Trade (CBT) is a bridge between sellers in different countries interested in selling globally. We help sellers connect to businesses and buyers in other countries. The challenge for an individual seller to sell internationally through Walmart brands is that each country has its own seller platform. Product listings, assortment, and classification methods are also different. How do we create a unified selling experience for individual sellers?
We concluded that our main product challenge:
My Role
I was the sole designer on the team. I designed an end-to-end seller experience from scratch. I worked closely with 3 product managers and a development team to implement a user-friendly interface for sellers.
The Problem
Painful Onboarding Process
What Made the Selling Process So Difficult?
A different seller problem appears during each stage of the product selling lifecycle. In this case study, I will elaborate more on the problems in Cataloging and Order Management.
Involve stakeholders
Invite Stakeholders to Product Workshop
To get stakeholders on board with the problems and the value of improving the process, I asked everyone in the CBT lifecycle to join a product workshop. Everyone got involved in brainstorming sessions to design end-to-end flows.
Finding Problems in Different Stages
After conducting user interviews and the product workshop, I created a one page seller journey map. In each stage, the seller encounters different problems.
Design principles
Define the Applicable Guidelines for Design
Four key design principles were generated based on research and analysis. They help guide the better design.
Iterations
Iteration after Feedback and Research
Results
Usability Testing
A usability test was conducted after the first prototype. The 5 people we interviewed all had positive feedback.
Business Impact
Connect back to our initial goal, we successfully reduced the customer complaints.
Design System
Consistency Is Key

Design For Future
As designers we should ask if this platform could still work after 10 or 20 years? While I am designing, I think about how the design also brings sustainability and adapts to other devices.
Business Strategy and Operation Needs for Sellers
Sellers mentioned that they have no idea what to sell in certain countries. It would be a great idea to work with IA Intelligent suggestions to provide better solutions for sellers. Also, providing sellers an in-app photo-editing tool would boost customer engagement and customer satisfaction.
